ABOUT ME

My name is Sarah Samuel and I pray that one day, it will be Dr. Sarah Samuel. Growing up, my family had always emphasized the importance of serving others - recognizing the needs of others and finding a way to meet it. As I grew older, that passion began to shape into medicine, and more specifically into medical missions. Where I am currently living, there are about 3 or 4 hospitals all within 20 minutes. There are plenty of doctors and there is no shortage of resources. However, in certain parts of the world and even in areas within the United States, there are places where this is simply not the case - and that is exactly where I want to work. Over the past semester, I had a very unique opportunity to see what health care looks like in various different settings. I spent one month in the Philippines and another month in Cape Town, South Africa seeing first hand what the healthcare infrastructure is like. The reason that I chose these places is because they were both in developing countries, but the challenges that they faced were different and the solutions they employed were also therefore unique. I wanted to see for myself if I could imagine leaving the luxuries and comforts of the United States and live in another country. After coming back home, the resounding answer is yes! There is something about life outside of the United States that captivates my heart. There is a sincerity and genuineness within people that is harder to come by here in the States and their appreciation for life and the simplicity in they way they live is something that astounded me.
As a Christian, I often make the comment that Jesus was the first medical missionary to ever walk on the face of the Earth. With most of the people that He interacted with, He almost always provided a dual healing - a spiritual healing as well as a physical healing. After spending a few months in these countries, that burden on my heart for medical missions has only grown tremendously. The need in the world is immense and the number of people rising up to the task are few. I refuse to live an ordinary life on earth - I want to be the hands and feet of Jesus and share His love by meeting both the physical and spiritual needs of all those around me.
